A cake smash session is a fun and memorable way to celebrate your baby’s first birthday. The combination of colorful cakes, adorable outfits, and messy fun creates beautiful keepsake photos. To ensure your session goes smoothly, here are some essential tips for parents:
1. choose the right time
Schedule the session when your baby is well-rested and fed (but not too full). A tired or hungry baby may not be in the mood to play.
2. styling
My style of photography is very minimalistic. We want the focus to be on your baby, not tons of props! Also, let's choose an outfit that is simple, easy to clean, and complements the color scheme of your cake. I have lots of outfits to choose from in my client closet!
3. Select the Perfect Cake
A soft, lightly frosted cake is ideal for smashing. Avoid fondant and hard decorations, as they may be difficult for little hands to break apart. Consider a vanilla or light-colored cake to avoid staining your baby’s skin. Red frosting can look like a bloody mouth (yikes) and brown frosting can look like...well, poop (gross!)
4. practice, practice, practice
Lots of babies are told not to be messy, or they don't know the feeling of cake and/or frosting. This can lead to a baby not wanting to participate in the cake smash...simply because they don't know what to do! Practicing smashing a cake with your baby beforehand can be super helpful! Even if it's just a small cupcake.
5. Capture Candid Moments
Encourage laughter and interaction. Sometimes, the best shots happen when your baby is naturally exploring and enjoying the moment.
6. Bring Wipes and Towels
A cake smash session can get messy! Have baby wipes, towels, and a change of clothes ready for cleanup.
7. don't stress
Not all babies will dive into the cake with enthusiasm, and that’s okay! Let them go at their own pace and enjoy the experience.
