Tips For a Successful Cake Smash

One year old photoshoots are SO much fun! I love getting to collaborate with my clients on colors, outfits, cakes, etc. Even though my setups are pretty simple and minimalistic, there is still lots going on behind the scenes before the session even ever happens. Here are a few different tips to help ensure a successful cake smash!

Tip #1- Nap Time

Probably the most important tip! When clients ask me what time to come for their session, I always ask what time works best around their baby's nap schedule. A grumpy baby can make things go downhill right from the start. So getting your baby to take a good nap beforehand is essential!

Tip #2- Cake Colors/Cake Type

There are two colors that I ask parents to stay away from when they are ordering their cakes.

Chocolate/Brown Frosting...I mean, you don't want your baby looking like they've smeared poo all over themselves :)

Red Velvet/Red Frosting...miiiiight look like there is blood all over them! Yikes.

Fondant...just say no!! Fondant is a type of frosting that is thick and hard that's rolled over on top of cakes to give it that smooth, seamless look. It looks great for any other event, but the point of cake smashes is to get messy and fondant just doesn't smear across the face and hands like regular frosting does. It's also hard for babies to break through and get to the actual cake. So be sure to tell your baker that you don't want fondant!

Tip #3- Practice!

So for several months now, you may have been saying "no no" to your baby when they make messes. Now it's time for their cake smash where they're encouraged to get messy....and they don't want to because they don't want to get in trouble. haha Or they've just never seen a big cake before in their life and don't know what to do with it. I've seen this several times! A week prior to your photoshoot, I definitely recommend introducing your baby to cake and encouraging them to play around with it. Even if it's just an individual cupcake you can get at the store. That way when it's time for their one year session, they know it's delicious and okay to get messy!
