Wide-eyed Babies

When you think of newborn photography, you picture those peaceful and sleepy babies. All cozy, milk drunk, and without a care in the world.

BUT that's not always the case. Sure, the majority of my newborns are asleep 95% of their photoshoot. However, once I start transitioning how the babies are wrapped or posed, there's a good chance they will wake up. And that's okay! When/if the newborn wakes up, here are my two poses I'll do during that time to ensure we're still getting some adorable photographs during that awake period.

Newborn Awake Pose #1- "Mug Shots"

This newborn pose is one of my favorites that I've started incorporating into my workflow! It works well when they are asleep, but when the babies are awake....well, that's when you get adorable eye contact and amazing expressions! A lot of times for this pose, the newborn is already slightly awake because I've just taken their little arms out for a chin on hands bucket shot. And either they've slept through that....OR it made them mad and now they are awake :) No worries, though! Let's get those amazing lying down shots that showcase allllll the expressions!

Newborn Awake Pose #2- "Huck Finn"

Most of my babies are awake at first for this pose because by this time in the photoshoot, it's snack time and maybe they just haven't fallen back into that deep sleep. With this wrap technique, I limit the use of their arms so they don't go all "jazz hands" on me. And I'm completely okay with the babies being awake during this because so many times, I get GREAT eye contact! And after a few minutes of lying down with my space heater off to the side, the babies will soon drift back into sleep. Another reason I love doing this pose with newborns? I also tend to get so many smiles! I have no idea why, but I'll take it! :)

I'll be honest, I used to panic when a newborn I was photographing wouldn't sleep. But over the years of my experience, I've at least found two different poses that works great if your baby hasn't fallen into that deep sleep yet. {This way, we aren't wasting time from your photoshoot waiting for your little one to finally rest.} And what better way to provide precious photographs of your newborn's personality than with some eye contact and funny faces :)
