When is the best time to schedule a maternity session?

One of the most common questions I hear from expecting mothers is:

“When should I schedule my maternity photos?”

Timing plays a big role in how comfortable you feel, how your bump photographs, and the overall experience of your session. If you’re planning a studio maternity session, the good news is that studio photography offers flexibility, comfort, and a timeless look...no matter the season.

Here’s everything you need to know about when to schedule your studio maternity photos and how to plan ahead for the best results.

The Ideal Time: 28–34 Weeks Pregnant

For most expecting mothers, the sweet spot for a studio maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks.

During this window:

Your baby bump is beautifully round and well-defined.

You’re typically still comfortable enough to pose and move easily.

Swelling is usually minimal compared to later weeks.

You’re less likely to feel rushed if baby arrives early.

This timeframe allows us to create elegant, flattering images while prioritizing your comfort throughout the session.

Why Studio Maternity Sessions Offer More Flexibility

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a studio maternity photographer is flexibility.

Unlike outdoor sessions, studio maternity photography:

  • Isn’t weather-dependent
  • Doesn’t require golden hour timing
  • Offers climate-controlled comfort
  • Provides consistent, flattering lighting

This means your session can be scheduled at a time of day that works best for your energy levels ...whether that’s mid-morning or early afternoon.

Can You Schedule Earlier or Later Than 28–34 Weeks?

Absolutely! Every pregnancy is unique.

Earlier than 28 weeks:

Some moms carrying multiples or experiencing faster bump growth may look ready earlier. Studio sessions can still be beautiful if your bump is clearly showing.

Later than 34 weeks:

If you’re feeling good and have had a smooth pregnancy, sessions at 35–36 weeks can still work. However, later sessions come with increased unpredictability, so scheduling earlier is always recommended when possible.

When Should You Book Your Session?

I recommend booking your studio maternity session during your second trimester, ideally between 20–24 weeks.

Booking early:

Ensures availability on my calendar.

Allows time to plan styling and wardrobe.

Reduces last-minute stress.

Once booked, we’ll choose a session date that aligns perfectly with your due date and comfort level.

What If You’re Planning Newborn Photos Too?

If you’re also considering newborn photography, maternity sessions pair beautifully with studio newborn sessions.

Booking both together:

Creates a cohesive, timeless look across your images.

Secures priority scheduling for newborn sessions.

Allows for a seamless, stress-free experience.

Many mothers love documenting this season in a calm studio environment from bump to baby.
